Pragyan Ojha: Life and times
Happy Birthday, Pragyan Ojha!
CLT20 2013: Mumbai Indians vs Perth Scorchers, Group A match, Delhi
India vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Bangalore (Aug 31- Sep 4, 2012)
Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha is the first Hyderabad cricketer to play for India in all three formats. He came into the fore by with 29 wickets in Ranji Trophy 2006-07, earning an ODI cap in 2008. He has been mostly impressive in IPL, bowling exceedingly well in the first six seasons, earning the Purple cap in IPL 2010. He was recalled for the ICC World T20 2009 in England.
Ojha was been a part of IPL winning teams thrice, twice with Mumbai Indians (MI) and once with Deccan Chargers (DC). He was also a part of MI’s winning campaign in CLT20. In 2011, he signed for Surrey and picked up 24 wickets from 4 games.
Ojha formed a formidable pair with Ravichandran Ashwin in Test cricket. He took a 10-wicket haul, his first, in Sachin Tendulkar’s final Test. He has also done brilliantly in the shorter formats, and became the first to take a wicket with his first ball in T20Is.
Not a great batsman, Ojha nevertheless played a crucial role in India’s 1-wicket win over Australia at Mohali in 2010-11, where he helped VVS Laxman see India through.
He was banned from bowling in international cricket in 2014 but the ban was lifted next year. Out of the Test team for some time now, Ojha moved to Bengal to improve his chances.
