Usually remembered as the son of Pankaj Roy, Pranab was one of the many openers India tried as Sunil Gavaskar’s opening partner throughout his career. He did not do too badly in his two Tests, scoring 6, 60*, and 5 — averaging 35.50 — before he was shunned for good.
Pranab comes from an extremely rich zamindar family of Bhagyakul. His father was already a legend in Bengal cricket by the time he made his First-Class debut, but Pranab carved a niche of his own with over 4,000 First-Class runs at 41. In Ranji Trophy he was a glutton for runs, scoring over 3,000 runs at 50 while converting 18 of his fifty-plus scores to hundreds.
Just like his father, the keys to Pranab’s success were his technique and concentration. After Delhi put up 545 for 7 in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final of 1986-87, Bengal finished on 464 for 9, thus getting eliminated. Pranab batted for 693 minutes, opening batting and remaining unbeaten on a 537-ball 230 — the highest score of his career. In the pre-quarter-final against Rajasthan earlier that month he scored 134.
However, his finest, and most crucial innings came in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final of 1989-90, when he carved out a five-hour 107, adding a crucial 275 with Arun Lal for the second wicket against Ravi Shastri and Raju Kulkarni. Bengal went on to win their second title in 1989-90.
Pranab runs the Pankaj Roy Cricket Academy currently. He does not stay in their palatial mansion anymore — one that has been given Heritage Building Status by Calcutta Municipal Corporation.
