A bright-eyed Prosper Utseya was handed an international debut when Sri Lanka toured Zimbabwe in 2004 after most frontline members side walked out of international cricket. He has come along a long way since then, guiding Zimbabwe through her most turbulent phase and remains a mainstay for Zimbabwe.
From a young age, he was tipped for bigger things. As an off-spinner, he is more stable than wicket-taking, and with the bat he has sound technique backed by temperament. A decade through his international career, Utseya remains one of the leading figures for Zimbabwe, who are still trying to regain lost ground at the highest level.
What Utseya lacks in flamboyance, he makes up for it with stability. He was appointed captain of Zimbabwe in 2006 and led them during the 2007 World Cup. He was also at the helm when Zimbabwe beat Australia in ICC World T20 2007. He remained captain till 2010 before making way for Elton Chigumbura.
Though Zimbabwe made a comeback to Test cricket in 2011, Utseya is majorly used in ODIs. In 2014 he became the second Zimbabwean to pick a hat-trick in ODIs and he starred during Zimbabwe’s historic ODI victory over Australia at Harare the same year.
However, Utseya’s action was reported shortly afterwards and he was barred from bowling off-breaks. Despite that, he was named in Zimbabwe’s side for the ICC World Cup 2015 as an all-rounder bowling seam-up instead of off-spin.
