Hugh ‘Pud’ Thurlow is unfortunately remembered as the No. 11 batsman man who was run out for a duck in his only Test, leaving Don Bradman one short of a triple-hundred. Thurlow had set off to give Bradman the run that would get him to the landmark; Bradman, realising he would never make it himself, sent him back, Thurlow fell short, and that was his Test career. He did not pick a wicket either.
To be fair to the selectors, Thurlow had a mediocre First-Class record. His 80 wickets from 31 matches came at 43. He was also hopeless with bat, and did not get a run in 25 out of 58 innings.
However, Thurlow had genuine pace. His Queensland captain Leo O’Connor claimed that Thurlow was “a yard faster than” Tim Wall, then Australia’s spearhead. For Queensland, Thurlow formed a lethal pair with Eddie Gilbert.
He once broke Bill Woodfull’s finger. On another occasion he sent Alan Kippax to the hospital with a blow on his temple (this was the same match where Gilbert famously troubled Bradman before getting him for a duck). And when West Indies toured Australia in 1930-31, he clean bowled George Headley.
That season he was suspended, along with four others, because they had “defied the selectors and picked their own team on tour.” He spent the rest of the summer trying to revive baseball in the city.
A diploma holder from the Australian Chemical Institute, Thurlow walked at RM Gow & Co., and later for renowned polymath Oscar Mendelsohn as an analytical chemist. He later became Director at OA Mendelsohn and Associates, and even later, Manager at Bulimba Brewery.
He also became a columnist for Truth, where he became famous for his outspoken approach. His cheeky sense of humour also made him a popular character.
Pud Thurlow passed away in 1975. He was 72.

Pud Thurlow was genuinely quick, and broke into the Australian Test side on sheer pace.
