Rangana Herath Biography

Starting to blossom in the early 30s is rare for a bowler, but Rangana Herath has done exactly that. He had made his Test debut in 1999 (and picked up six wickets) but found himself in and out of the side, playing a mere 14 Tests till 2008.

The fading away of Ajantha Mendis gave Herath a second opportunity, which he grabbed with both hands. The first signs of what was to come showed against Pakistan at Galle in 2009 where he pulled off an unexpected win with four for 15. With Muttiah Muralitharan retiring in 2010, Herath slowly established himself as the leading spinner of the side.

There are three basic mantras to Herath’s success: he is not afraid to toss the ball up and beat the batsman in flight; his shock delivery is a lethal one that zaps through, and is bowled without any visible change in action; and just like Murali, he does not seem to tire.

His relentless stamina was first seen against Australia at SSC in 2011, where he sent down 52 overs to take a seven-wicket haul. He claimed three consecutive six-fors against England the next year and three consecutive five-fors later that year. After being the leading wicket-taker of 2012, he did an encore in 2014. Against Pakistan at SSC in 2014 Herath took nine for 127 — the best innings figures by a left-arm bowler. He also returned freak figures of 3.2-2-3-5 in the ICC World T20 that year.
