Sabbir Rahman Biography

Sabbir Rahman of Rajshahi is one of the mainstays of Bangladesh’s batting, especially in limited-overs cricket. A wonderful striker of the ball, an occasional leg-spinner and a brilliant fielder, Sabbir rose through the junior ranks. He impressed in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand with 207 runs at 51.75 and a strike rate of 118. He also picked 4 wickets with his leg-breaks.

Later that year he became a national hero when Bangladesh won their first Asian Games Gold. He struck 2 sixes in the penultimate over. His 18-ball unbeaten 33 saw Bangladesh cross the Afghan barrier in the final over at the Guangzhou International Cricket Stadium. He was only 19.

Sabbir began playing First-Class at 16. He eventually got his international cap in 2014, in a T20I against Sri Lank at Chittagong and immediately made an impression by top-scoring with 26 in a low-scoring thriller. He was drafted into the ODI side a few months ahead of the 2015 World Cup. Bangladesh’s run ended in the quarter-final but Sabbir had made a strong case for himself with 182 runs at 36.4 at a strike rate of 98.

Sabbir got his Test cap during the England tour of Bangladesh in 2016-17. His Test debut came in the famous Chittagong Test that England won by 22 runs. Chasing 286, Bangladesh were bowled out for 263 and Sabbir remained unbeaten on a resilient 64, almost sealing it for the hosts. Within a year into Test cricket Sabbir became been a part of XIs that registered wins against England and Sri Lanka.

A much sought-after T20 cricketer, Sabbir has played for Barisal Bulls and Rajshahi Kings in BPL. His 122 for Rajshahi is the highest individual score in BPL history individual score. Sabbir was also Player of the Tournament in the 2016 Asia Cup T20, where Bangladesh finished as runners-up to India. He also has 3 five-wicket hauls in Dhaka Premier Division games.
