Shikhar Dhawan’s Test debut was nothing short of a fairytale comeback. Overabundance of talent meant little if you were an opener from a team like Delhi, which boasted the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra in their primes. Overcoming the stumbles, in 2010-11, Dhawan fulfilled his dream to don India colours but after averaging 13.80 in his first 5 ODIs and several seasons of ordinary IPL outings, made it seem like the southpaw's transition from domestic cricket uncertain.
Dhawan was forgotten for close to two years before being handed the Test cap against Australia at Mohali in 2013, where he slipped into the big boots of Sehwag. With an array of extravagant strokes, Dhawan stamped his authority in international cricket, as he stroked his way to the fastest Test century on debut. The 187 off 174 balls made Dhawan a household name and that was just the start of a prolific season.
Complete with flamboyant strokeplay, a larger-than-life personality, bulging biceps, tattoos and the trademark twirled moustache, Dhawan is a showman who belongs to the modern era of supremely confident sportsmen. However, his rise to the top has not been smooth.
Starting at Under-16, Dhawan played for several age groups. At 15, he made it to the Under-17 Asia Cup squad and ended up averaging 85 from 3 outings. He was soon promoted to Delhi Under-19 squad. In Under-19 World Cup 2004, Dhawan ended up as the leading run-scorer as India finished runners-up. Despite the early success, Dhawan had to grind it hard at the domestic level for close to a decade to be a certainty in the Indian line-up.
Dhawan has found more success in ODIs. His elegant array of strokes, especially the punches on the off-side and nerve to thrive under pressure makes him one of the mainstays of Indian batting. With 363 runs at 90.75, Dhawan was one of the architects of India's Champions Trophy triumph in England in 2013. India enjoyed an impressive unbeaten run till the semi-final of World Cup 2015, and Dhawan starred by amassing 412 runs at 51.50.
Having played for Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers, Dhawan became an icon player for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, a side he went on to win IPL with, in 2016.
