With a technique to delight the purists, SS Das was widely acknowledged to be a long-serving opening batsman of India. However, the way his career panned out was not really ideal. It also provides strong argument that while perfection of technique is always handy against ordinary bowling, it does require something extra, at times even unorthodox, to succeed against great attacks.
Das scored heavily against Zimbabwe. He was lucky to have played more than 25 per cent of his Tests against them, ended up with more than 42% of his runs against the minnow, and both his centuries came against that suffering opposition. Against strong attacks it was, unfortunately, a different story. He scored at 28.83 against Australia, 18.80 against South Africa and 32.25 against England.
He had his moments: before VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid forged their famous partnership in Kolkata, Das got India off to a solid start with 39; in the decider at Chennai he had a resolute 84; at SSC the same year he got 59 and 68; at Bloemfontein he top-scored with 62; and he helped India clinch the series against England with 41 and 58 at Motera.
When he played all 5 Tests in West Indies in 2002 and ended with 122 runs at 15.50, he was dropped from the side. The opening slots were taken over by Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra.
His attempts to get back in the side were unsuccessful and by 2012 he was also dropped from the Orissa side.
