Steve Smith had an unremarkable career, but that was not the worst bit: he shared his name with a later-day Australian captain with formidable numbers, which pushed him back into further obscurity.
A gritty opener and a quality fielder, Smith first grabbed attention with a mammoth 263 against Victoria in 1982-83. The following season fetched him 480 runs at 44, and he was taken to West Indies. He had the misfortune of playing all his Tests on the West Indies tour of 1983-84. He scored 3, 12, 10, 7, and 9.
To be fair, however, Smith had started the tour with two hundreds in the Guyana match and added another against Windward Islands. However, his entire First-Class career (5,248 runs at 36) was barely more productive, though things may look different if we take a closer look.
The 28 ODIs were more productive. While he scored hundreds against New Zealand and Pakistan, he also got 4 fifties in his last 7 innings before his career came to a halt when he decided to tour South Africa with the rebel Australians.
Opening batting, he kept Garth le Roux and Clive Rice at bay in an unofficial ‘Test’, scoring 116. The following season saw him slam 137 in a team score of 264; this time Craig McMillan and Omar Henry had joined forces with le Roux and Rice.
He topped the Australian charts on that tour, scoring 769 runs at 59. They named him South African Cricket Annual Cricketer of the Year.
If one combines his Test career with the rebel ‘Tests’ in South Africa, his numbers go up to 570 runs at an acceptable 41.
Along with stints for New South Wales (NSW), he returned to South Africa to play for Transvaal for two seasons.
He later ran an indoor cricket centre, became a batting coach, and served as an NSW selector.
