IPL 2016: Top 5 run-scorers in the history of Indian Premier League
Suresh Raina wrote his name in history when he became the first Indian batsman to score tons in all the three formats in international cricket. With a penchant to play aggressive shots, Raina has become one of the best batsmen in the world in the shorter formats. In ODIs, he has the knack of finishing games lower down the order and in T20 cricket, he is a good option at no 3, where he takes the attack from the word go. However, owing to his obvious shortcoming against the short ball, Raina has not quite lived up to his talent in Test cricket.
Raina came through the ranks in age group cricket. He represented India under-19 at the 2004 World Cup along with the likes of Robin Uthappa, RP Singh and Ambati Rayudu. His talent was recognized by Greg Chappell and he made his debut during the Australian’s tenure as India coach in 2005.
Early in his career, he showed the penchant to play attractive strokes and finished a few ODIs. However, he only established himself in 2008 when India selected a new-look Indian team. He continued to remain a vital part of the one-day setup, even captaining a second string side to Zimbabwe in 2010. At the ICC World T20 2010, he smashed a ton against South Africa and then followed with a century on Test debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo the same year.
In 2011, Raina played a crucial role in India’s triumph at the ICC World Cup, where he essayed important knocks against Australia and Pakistan in crunch knockouts. He continued to be a regular in ODIs, but was brutally exposed on the tumultuous tour to England during the Test whitewash later that year. Though he has a good ODI record in the subcontinent, his numbers overseas has to improve. If he can rectify a few technical flaws, India will have a very good batsman to bank on.
