Tim Southee Biography

Tim Southee makes for a delightful watch with a fluent action and ability to swing the ball late which fetches him wickets regularly. Apart from swing, Southee possesses a key ability to bowl yorkers which makes him an equally effective T20 bowler.

By the age of 15, Southee was a successful rugby player as well — a sport which has more prominence than the gentleman’s game in New Zealand. But Southee chose cricket and quickly progressed through the ranks. He was Man of the tournament in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup where the Kiwis reached the semis. His six-for against Auckland in the Plunket Shield helped him to further stake a claim for a New Zealand cap.

On his Test debut against England at Napier, Southee picked a six-for and scored a savage 77. By 22, Southee was already among the best pace options for New Zealand. In 2011 he became the second Kiwi to take a hat-trick in T20Is.

He was easily New Zealand’s best bowler in the 2011 World Cup and had a fruitful outing in the subcontinent against India and Sri Lanka. His spell of seven for 64 against India at Bangalore remains one of the highlights of his Test career. In 2013, he became the first overseas bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test match at Lord’s since South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini, and the first New Zealand bowler since Dion Nash to do so.
