Sachin Tendulkar retirement: Hope he scores a ton in his final game, says Venkatesh Prasad
Venkatesh Prasad disappointed with Suresh Raina’s exclusion from Indian Test team
For five years, Venkatesh Prasad teamed up with Javagal Srinath to form arguably the best Indian new ball bowling combination ever since the unseen, legendary days of Mohammad Nissar and Amar Singh.
Tall and well-built, Prasad seemed laidback and slow with the tardy approach to the wicket, and many perceived him to be less than fast-medium. However, he could bowl genuinely quick deliveries. The bounce he got from the wicket could be disconcerting at times. In England, where he made his excellent debut, he was more than a handful, but he had the ability to move the ball both ways even on the unhelpful Indian tracks.
As an Indian pacer abroad, Prasad’s best performances were often in defeats when the firepower delivered by Srinath and he were drowned by the salvo of multiple quality fast bowlers of the opposition.
Yet, his 10 wickets at Durban in 1996 stands out as an outstanding effort. Yet, his best spell was in Madras when he captured 6 Pakistani wickets for 33 in that superb 1999 Test, when he brought India back into the match by knocking over 5 batsmen without conceding a run. He did the same on the second morning in Calcutta in 1996-97 against South Africa after Andrew Hudson and Gary Kirsten hammered them throughout Day One.
In ODIs, he played a major role for several seasons, including two World Cups, with two performances against Pakistan, at Bangalore in 1996 and Old Trafford in 1999, being the most memorable.
His performance tailed off as the century changed over and he lost his place in the team, finishing tragically 4 short of both 100 Test wickets and 200 ODI wickets. After his playing days he moved on to a coaching role and has achieved considerable success as a bowling coach.
