England vs South Africa 2017

South Africa sans Dale Steyn will embark on a long tour of England, chasing several trophies in mid 2017. While England and Wales will play host to the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, South Africa will arrive in the country to play a bilateral three-match One-Day International (ODI) series ahead of the Champions Trophy, following which a three-match Twenty20 series as well as a four-Test series will also be held.

South Africa will also be playing a few tour matches along the way. Ahead of the ODIs versus England, the South Africans will play against Sussex and Northamptonshire. Late in June 2017, South Africa’s national side will face their ‘A’ side at the County Ground in Worcester to change gears to get into Test cricket mode.

Steyn is not the only big name missing from the mix, as AB de Villiers will not be taking part in the four-Test series. The former captain has prolonged his return to Test cricket, which he wants to accomplish with the Test series against India at home towards the end of this year. De Villiers, however, will be playing in the ODIs as well as the Champions Trophy.

England will be hosting South Africa for a bilateral series for the first time since 2012. Back then, England were beaten 0-2 by South Africa in a three-Test series. On that tour, South Africa and England were also involved in a five-match ODI series which ended up in a 2-2 draw. The first ODI of that series was washed out.

While the ODI series will serve as a perfect training platform for the Champions Trophy, all eyes will be on England’s Test team, which will be captained by the young Joe Root for the first time. Root has taken over the captaincy reins from Alastair Cook, who resigned post India tour and has been in tremendous form across formats since his return.
