Sri Lanka struggled their way to a score of 145 for the loss of six wickets at tea on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on Thursday. Resuming from their score of 59 for 4 at the end of the first session, the duo of Dinesh Chandimal and Milinda Siriwardana added 31 runs in an effort to rebuild the Sri Lankan innings, before Chandimal was bowled by a ripper of a delivery from Jerome Taylor, getting an inside edge off a delivery that was pitched on off and slightly short of good length. Siriwardana later brought up his half-century with a six minutes before the end of the session, smashing five fours and two sixes during his innings. West Indian debutant Jomel Warrican got his maiden international wicket in the session. The left-arm orthodox spinner, who received his Test cap from West Indian legendary all-rounder Garry Sobers at the start of the day, bowled a full toss to Sri Lankan wicketkeeper batsman Kusal Perera, who popped a simple return catch to the bowler to depart for a score of 16 off 26 balls. The dismissal piled further misery on the hosts as they lost their sixth wicket with 127 runs on board during the second session of the day. Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. While the hosts opted to draft Kusal Mendis and Dilruwan Perera in place of the out-of-form Lahiru Thirimanne and Tharindu Kaushal, West Indies made the only change to their playing eleven by drafting in debutant Jomel Warrican in place of Shannon Gabriel. Warrican, who received his Test cap from Garry Sobers, was hit for a boundary off his first ball in international cricket.
