The marathon stand of 624 runs by Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakarra!

Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakarra share a great camaraderie and were years were Sri Lanka’s backbone of batting. They enjoyed each other’s success and such companionship in sport is rarely seen in today’s world of competition. It’s fitting that their name tops the list of highest batting partnership in Test cricket.

On this day, nine years back, the cricket world saw the biggest Test partnership of all time and it came against the South African bowling attack. Jayawardene and Sangakkara got past the previous best of 576 — put up by their compatriots Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama against India in 1997. The duo put on a stand of 624 runs for the third wicket as they batted for almost three days.

The bowling attack comprising of Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn, Andre Nel, Andrew Hall and Nicky Boje were taken apart. Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain went on to score 374, while Sangakkara scored 287.

Muttiah Muralitharan went on to pick 10-wickets in the Test as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 153 runs.
